Exhibit: Newfields Community Church
The exhibit, Crying in the Wilderness: An Immigrant’s Journey in Detention, illustrates through powerful photographs, words and artwork the emotional toll of detaining an immigrant. “Antony” (a pseudonym for his safety) was shackled, chained and jailed by immigration authorities in 2018, only for requesting asylum. At the start of the pandemic, he was moved from the jail to a host home, but still constantly tracked with an ankle monitor. For the last year, photographer Becky Field has documented his life in the confines of the home. Her black and white photographs show the emotional toll of the ever-present monitor on a man’s dignity and freedom. A poet and artist, Antony contributes drawings and words to the exhibit of photographs.
This exhibit can be seen from April 18 – May 23, 2023.
